Learn About Vapes

What is a Vaporizer?

Vaporizers release the active components of a plant, wax, or e-liquid by heating at a low temperature, producing an aromatic vapor that can be inhaled. This is widely considered to be a much healthier alternative to smoking, in which smoke is produced by literally burning the plant material, which releases all sorts of harmful by-products.

Vaporization has exploded in popularity in the last several years, as the public is looking for a product that can produce the same desirable effects as smoking, without the extremely unhealthy side effects. Numerous companies have sprung up to manufacture a variety of portable vapes, table top vapes, and vape pens to meet the overwhelming demand.

Deciding whether to choose a vape pen, table top vape, or portable vape depends on your goals and lifestyle. If you’re primarily intending on vaping herbal blends at home or with friends, a table top vape is the clear choice. If you’re planning to vape on the go, or if you want to vape nicotine e-juice, you’ll want to purchase a vape pen or a mod, with vape pens being the most popular due to their stylish simplicity.

There are several different options to consider when looking at purchasing a table top vape. Some utilize a ceramic heating element while others are plug-in types that feature an internal heating system. You’ll come across models that feature a whip-style delivery method, meaning that the intensity of the hits controlled directly by the users speed of inhalation. Others feature a fan or air pump to automatically send air over the blend. Portable vapes are powered by either an external or internal battery.

These vaporizers are confusing! What do I need to know to get started?

Table Top Vaporizers

Table top vapes come in one of two varieties: Whip-Style and Forced Air.

Whip-Style Vaporizers

Whip-Style (aka Box-style) vaporizers give you the maximum amount of control over the vaporization process. They feature a ceramic heating element and are designed to require the user to inhale through the tubing in order to create a convection current that blows hot air over the herbal blend.

If you’re looking to purchase a whip-style vape, we highly recommend the Silver Surfer line of vaporizers, produced by 7th Floor.

Forced Air Vaporizers

Forced Air Vapes use an internal fan to, as the name describes, force hot air over the material in the chamber. Most units include the ability to control the temperature, giving you greater customizability and control over the vaping process. These units must be plugged in to an outlet.

The most popular forced air vape that we carry is the Volcano Digital, which also includes the revolutionary balloon bag delivery system which captures the vapor generated by the fan.

Portable Vaporizers

For the on the go vaper, a portable vaporizer represents the best option. They feature either an internal battery, external battery, or a click-activated butane chamber. Extremely small and lightweight, they can fit in your pocket or purse and can be used virtually anywhere.

An example of a portable vaporizer is the minVAP. It has been highly recommended by vapor enthusiasts.

Vaporizer Pens

Vaporizer pens have exploded in popularity recently as people are discovering the joy of vaping with a device that is lightweight, stylish, and simple to operate.  They are heated in using one of the following two containers: atomizer or cartomizer.

The atomizer style uses a heating coil to create a convection current, which then heats the herb, oil, or wax and creates a vapor that can then be inhaled. The cartomizer style creates a conduction current due to the direct contact between the heating coil and the oil, wax, or herb, creating an inhalable vapor.

The Atmos RX is a highly recommended example of a vape pen.

Mod Vaporizers

A mod vape is basically a much more advanced version of a vape pen. It's generally recommended that you gain some experience using a vape pen before upgrading to a  mod vape.

Mod vapes are significantly more powerful than the much smaller vape pens, they have a longer battery life, and tend to produce way more vapor than a vape pen. While the options for customizing a vape pen are limited or nonexistent, mod vapes are designed specifically to be customized. The voltage and wattage can be adjusted (except on mechanical mods), which influences the temperature and amount of vapor that is produced by the device. There are a variety of mod vape batteries, mod vape chargers, rebuildable atomizers, rebuildable dripping atomizers, and mod vape tanks that can be used to customize your mod vape.

The mod vape tank is where the e-liquid that is about to vaped is held. There are a variety of different tanks that you can use depending on what type of vaping experience you desire. There's clearomizers and atomizers. Some are rebuildable and some are not designed to be built. Explaining the difference is outside the scope of this article, but be sure to read our vape blog for more information.

Most mods are sold separate from the clearomizer or atomizer. When you buy a mod, you'll have to also purchase an atomizer or clearomizer separately, unless the mod you're purchasing specifically states that it comes with one. This is to ensure that you have greater ability to customize your vaping experience.

Mods are available as either regulated or unregulated devices. Regulated devices give you the ability to control voltage and wattage, and are usually preferred by beginners. Unregulated, also known as mechanical, mods allow you to experience the full power of your lithium ion batteries, but can be dangerous if used by beginners. They are recommended only for experienced vapers who know exactly what they want and who know how to handle unprotected batteries safely.

The iTaste 134 is an example of a high end mod vape.
